The Luck of the Irish
At this time of year nearly everyone claims to have a drop of Irish blood in their veins – after all, if you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough, as the saying goes.
St Patrick’s Day seems to get bigger every year, all around the world. Did you know that Australia is known as the 'most Irish country in the world outside of Ireland'? This is because so many Australians trace their roots to Ireland. The Irish also went to Britain, USA, Canada, Argentina, New Zealand, Mexico, South Africa, Brazil and states of the Caribbean and continental Europe.
There are all sorts of activities going on and here at YouPlay we're no exception. Join in our St Patrick’s Day Treasure Hunt, answer our Irish actors’ poll and write in and tell us your Irish connections. In my case, my mother came from Bere Island, a beautiful isle in Bantry Bay, Co Cork, which I visit as often as I can. We’d love to hear from you, just for the craic!
The Luck of the Irish
I was born in dublin and lived there very happily until i met my husband and moved to Holland.Ive been here now for 40 years and am still homesick.I cant tell you how beautiful Ireland is and how friendly and meek the Irish people are.If you ever get the chance to go there i know you will find this out for yourself. Please read and enjoy as many irish writers as you can because through there books you will come to love Ireland as much as i do. May God always be near you and touch your lives in many ways. Shamrock xxx
I'm lucky enough to be from a lovely little place called Aughavas, Co. Leitrim in the North West of Ireland, we have a beautiful country and pride ourselves on a warm welcome so come and visit us cause we could do with an extra bit of tourism in these recissionary times, oh and I'm very disapointed that I cant enter the Paddys Day compition, me being Irish and all!! May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live. May the grass grow long on the road to hell for want of use. As you slide down the banisters of life may the splinters never point the wrong way. May your troubles be as few and as far apart as my Grandmothers teeth. May the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends gathered below never fall out. May the Lord keep you in His hand and never close His fist too tight. May your neighbors respect you, Trouble neglect you, The angels protect you, And heaven accept you. May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light, may good luck pursue you each morning and night. In the New Year, may your right hand always be stretched out in friendship and never in want. Here's that we may always have a clean shirt, a clean conscience, and a guinea in our pocket. May you die in bed at ninety-five years, shot by a jealous husband(or wife). May you have the hindsight to know where you've been, the foresight to know where you're going and the insight to know when you're going too far. May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies, quick to make friends. But rich or poor, quick or slow, may you know nothing but happiness from this day foward. May the frost never afflict your spuds. May the outside leaves of your cabbage always be free from worms. May the crow never pick your haystack, and may your donkey always be in foal. May the sound of happy music, And the lilt of Irish laughter, fill your heart with gladness, that stays forever after. May the hinges of our friendship never grow rusty. Beautiful young people are acts of nature, But beautiful old people are works of art. Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig!!
My Ma was born on the west coast of Ireland and the farm is still in the family so had the opportunity to stay in the homestead that my Grandparents built last year. Aye, its a grand place alright, and the people very friendly. May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow. And may you avoid trouble wherever you go.
i would love to go to Ireland, i myself was born in Holland, i loved my country but Ireland would be the first country i would visit if i ever went back to europe
I also have many Irish friends, and love the Irish people. They have a wonderful warm nature, and a great sense of humour. I also would love to visit Ireland one day, and as my roots are from Scotland, would try to visit both!!
Well done RosieK, I feel that I should be writing some of your Irish wishes down and keeping them somewhere safe, then when i have to write on a greeting card I will sound profound and meaningful without hurting my brain trying to think of my own...(not sure if that makes me a shallow person or just an opportunist). I travelled to quite a few countries in Britain and Europe and have to say that Ireland was my no.1 favourite country. I knew it was called the emerald Isle for a reason but was still struck by its hurt your eyes green-ness. Such a contrast to our own wide brown land geographically and yet the people have so many similarities to Australians and the way we celebrate life, that i felt quite at home. So raise a glass on St Pat's day and we'll pretend that we're Irish, even if only for a day.
One of the reasons I kept my madien name when I married is because it's one of the way I feel Irish. Certainly whenever I say my name is Colleen Kelley, people ask! I know my mom's family was very Irish, though she was the fourth generation born in San Francisco (new by your standards, old by ours) but we've lost touch. And though I've lived in France and Luxembourg, I've never made it over to Ireland. Ones of these days... Happy St Patrick's Day, all.
Hi, My Dad was born on the ship when his parents from Lurgon in County Armagh were en route to a new life (with their 9 other children) in Oz in 1889. Imagine 9 kids & heavily pregnant with No 10 on a ship for several months!! More power to them. Dad's birth certificate said he was born at Latitude ?? Longitude?? in Australian waters so guess that makes him an Aussie! His Dad was a shoe repairer and they settled in Rockhampton.
Hi,I've just had a trivia answer that states that U.K. shares a land border with R.O.I. I think i'd need my wellies for that crossing.
Northern Ireland is part of UK. That's where the land border is.
I have great grandparents from Co. Antrim. Would love to go there one day

The bombing campaigns of the 70's and 80's are the legacy of the irish that the sentimental nonsense about the irish conveniently overlooks.
Now now Jelleebean, if you were old enough you could say the same for the fifties and before that we had the twenties and thirties. We are a young country (80 years old). Every country has had it's bad times (sorry for such a lame expression) but we have a peace treaty now and let's look to the good times ahead. OK?
