Trivia Combat: Pre-release notes

By Dr. Play

Hi everyone!

We thought it would be a good idea to publish a list of the gremlins that we're currently planning to chase out of Trivia Combat. Check this post regularly as I'll continue to update on development progress over the coming week:

Gremlins currently under investigation:

  • One YouPlay 'bot sometimes answers all questions incorrectly
  • In-game mute function will not always work
  • Chat sometimes logs in & out
  • Errors in the appearance of the Welcome screen
  • Joining rooms may not work in Google Chrome browser
  • Instability using Apple Safari browser under Microsoft Windows

In addition to solving these issues, we'll also be adding some new Trivia Combat game functionality, so feel free to post your thoughts or requests here.

Talking about gremlins, I have on occasions been marked wrong for a correct answer, and the very next question been given a tick for a question I did not answer. Has anyone else noticed this? Still having fun playing though. Tinkers.

Thanks for your comment Tinkers! This particular issue can be due to intermittent high load on the database server, and we're looking at ways we can alleviate the issue. It's great to hear you're enjoying the game!

I don't like the new appearance for the who's online list...too enlarged. I'm glad you mentioned the above item Tinkers...I thought it was happening but wasn't quite sure as some games are quite fast. I haven't minded when bots don't answer unless you are playing 3.

can we please have a little longer to answer the questions?

I have experienced the same "gremlins" as Tinkers and Stitchpuzz. As Shamrock stated a little more time would be good - particularly when some questions are longer than others. Otherwise I love playing it - couldn't let the numbers bods have all the fun of combat!!!!

New to the game and love it. Sometimes get a little impatient waiting for an opponent.

p.s why a 10 game per day limit?

I am enjoying this game much more than the Twivia Tease, even if my brain isn't functioning as quickly as I would like. I find the music while waiting irritating, I use the mute button on my computer. When I get an answer wrong it would be nice to see what the correct answer was.

Like other players, I have been marked wrong for a correct answer and would also like to see the right answer for ones I get wrong. Otherwise loving it.

Why are the questions so hard? I hardly ever score more than 2 right!

What are gremlins? Ive seen the movie.

I love it, like some others I would like to see the correct answer. All in all a lot of fun and enjoy it immensely.

Can we change an answer when we've hit too fast if there's time. Probably not but worth an ask. A couple of times I've had the game go into a stopped mode when the question is about to be marked. I then have a problem getting back in....could be a problem at this end but not sure. Only happens in combat.

Loving Trivia Combat. As with other comments, hate the music and would like to know the answers, otherwise keep up the challengers! Thanks for indulging us Trivia buffs.

Love Trivia Combat but would like a bit longer to answer as some questions are quite long, also as other players have asked, if we could see the correct answers?

I enjoyed my first attempt at Trivia Combat. I also would like to see the correct answer displayed. At least once I am positive I gave the correct answer but was marked wrong.

Trivia Combat is great fun!! - thanks Youplay Team. I like it just as it is. You often get questions popping up fairly regularly - and I prefer the challenge of NOT having been given the correct answer previously, as some of the actual answers are quite unexpected and it takes several attempts to work out which one is right.

I agree with angelcat. I prefer the challenge of getting the correct answer myself. Also the premium members would get quite an advantage against those with a 10 game cap. Loving it! Cheers YP

Is there any way of speeding up the game when you are playing against "the bots"? I find that it can sometimes be quite slow timewise that is. Thanks

avatar
October 27, 2009 at 7:48 AM

The game is fun, thankyou. A couple of problems. I can't use the chat at the side and helpbot just keeps repeating most of the time 'you are logged in.....'etc.

Hi everyone, and thanks for the great response!

We're extending the pre-release period for Trivia Combat for an additional week so that we can finish building a few last-minute features and ensure the last few gremlins are contained.

A 'sneak-peek' at the new features to be released:
* select categories to build your own quiz
* better looking chat, join game and create game screens
* improved 'bot logic and the introduction of new 'bots!

So, please keep the comments coming: we really want to hear from you to ensure that the game works well and includes all the features you'd like to see.

A special thanks goes out to stitchpuzz, Tinkers and Teta for such great feedback, keep it up! :-)

@chartreuse, please check your YouPlay Inbox, we'll render you some assistance from there.

Some people are listed as in the room then the chat says they enter the room. That seems odd. Usually people are on the list til their game starts but some seem to remain on the list despite coming in and out of games. I use the list to see who might be waiting. Your name does the same thing Dr Play...you are in the room then you enter.....is there 2 of you? lol

I have noticed that some players do not like the music while waiting to play,(me being one of them). I personally don't switch my speakers on, so problem solved. Perhaps the music could be changed to a good old Aussie Classic instead. "Click goes the Shears" comes to mind. I'm sure other players could come up with a suggestion or two.

I agree with previous comments regarding music and seeing the correct answers. As I am in the UK I always seem to end up playing against the 'bots' and they always seem to be the same. I am not a 'premium' player and would like to be able to play more than just the 'instant play'. Are there any plans for something like this?

Hi, Where I live I can only get dial up & I seem to be at a disadvantage to all the lucky broadband users. But overall, I like the game.

October 28, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Had an experience tonight with the last question in a set, the question on which animal is the closest relative to the hippopotamus. I selected 'whale' which I knew to be right. The selection faded to pale blue, appearing to freeze, then a cross appeared on the right with the selection still pale blue. All contestants got crosses for the same question.

Enjoying the game! I know you are fixing the gremlins at your end but can you also work on my end - my brain doesn't seem to have as much trivia in as as I thought and the speed is a litle slow. I'm thinking it might be full!! Also I ma having the same chat problem as chartreuse.

Hiya pando,
Please check your YP Inbox, there's an update coming soon.

October 29, 2009 at 4:14 PM

The "make a game" and "join a game" pages look great! Well done. If anyone wants to test them out say I'm willing! Will the update fix the flash 10 Mac clash? My firefox just updated and says 9 might clash in some places.

I tried the 'create a game' feature playingd against 'bots'. The time to answer seemed shorter than in 'instant play'. I didn't have enough time to read one question, far less answer it. The questions wasn't one of the longer ones either. Is the time allowed shorter because the categories are self-selected?

Hi, Dr P....thanks for this game..am really enjoying it. However there seems to be a problem in the Join a Game section. CalypsoBelle is listed as waiting or playing 3 separate games and I think another player is listed once. Neither players are currently online. Also, had an odd occurence while playing...had 4 players, then one disappeared and then the questions were repeated, and then another player joined the game, and the questions restarted (and repeated) again! Most disconcerting! lol....Thanks again, Dr P.

I turned up as a blank to other players when I went through Join a game option. It seems to happen when players join as replacements for bots in the last miliseconds. The blank playername etc appear in the final scoreboard. In game the player is a movable gap.

Can we have a bit of a pause/countdown before the first question? Invariably my pointer is never in the right spot :-(

avatar
November 02, 2009 at 5:45 PM

For some unknown reason my avatar has not changed for the final scoreboards in a game...leader boards are fine. Just add that to the people who leave at the log in stage who are really there and the double log ins we discussed earlier. PS Happy to keep you in work....lol

Enjoy playing this but as a Kiwi I find there are too many questions needing knowledge of things Australian such as sport, TV, politics and geography.

I really enjoy trivia combat, but how come it doesn't register as a tie if you get the same points, same accuracy percentage and same average time for answering questions?

Hi Dr Play - the 5 sec countdown works much better, but is it possible for everyone to see it at the same time? - at the moment only the person who has pressed 'Start' can. Thanks.

Who is the room creator on instant play? I assume the top name on the list. The label on the waiting page is squashed up now on my view.....use a combination...etc

Enjoying this game. There used to be a 'ding' when another player joined the game while waiting. That was useful as sometimes, while waiting, I would minimise the window & do other things until I heard the 'ding' of someone else joining the game. not a biggie though :)

Yes, stitchpuzz, the room owner is indeed the first one in the room - the person who 'creates' the room. The introductory text will soon be modified so that it shows the quiz categories chosen, so stay tuned. And the 'ding' has returned, craigybel, hope that helps. Happy puzzling!
