NEW PUZZLE: CALkuro
Hi YouPlayers - and welcome to the wonderful world of Lovatts CALkuro - the puzzle that makes you smarter!
Lovatts CALkuro puzzles are inspired by the KenKen® logic puzzles originally created by Japanese maths teacher Tetsuya Miyamoto, a practioner of the wise "art of teaching without teaching".
When a contingency of over-excited puzzle boffins suddenly appeared in my office doorway one recent afternoon, blinking at the unnatural light and wildly brandishing the first batch of Lovatts CALkuro puzzles, I knew something special was afoot.
(Mostly YouPlayers, because puzzle-boffins are not like you and I. They are timid, reclusive little creatures with big, brown pools for eyes and a slight covering of red downy fur, and they prefer to huddle together in their dark and cosy little puzzle den, dreaming up riddles and teasers. And to see such a feverishly animated group of them clambouring over one another like a litter of bouncy, fluffy puppies - well, it was just un-natural.)
But also, because once I had managed to retrieve a CALkuro puzzle from the wiry grip of the chief puzzle-boffin, and sat down to determine the cause of such a fuss, I knew that this was a winner - and highly addictive to boot.
You see, I have never been one of those dedicated (and somewhat smug) "mathophiles", preferring instead to see the world through words and pictures. Never have I spent a heady night calculating pi to six decimal places, or ruminating on the pure simplicity of the Fibonacci sequence. It seemed that mathematics and I were doomed to be forever estranged.
Until CALkuro.
Suddenly I was multiplying, adding, dividing and subtracting numbers with all the (smug) mental agility of a (lesser-known) mathematician.
And. I. Was. Enjoying. It.
Hoorah for maths! Hoorah for Tets and the boffins! Hoorah for CALkuro!
But how do we play it, you ask?
Well, it might help to think of CALkuro in pie-chart terms (see - maths!) Or maybe as a pie recipe if you're feeling hungry. It's two parts Sudoku to one part Kakuro. Add half a part of Addoku and a splash of Shapeshifter. Like all logic puzzles (and pies for that matter), the best way to learn is to get stuck in. i love this new thing we've got here but i wouldn'd know how to play some of these games
For a site that deals with puzzles, many of them word puzzles, not to mention offering us a "word of the day," these cutesy posts have some of the most egregious grammatical and semantic errors. The latest includes the phrase, "like you or I," and the previous post had the phrase, if memory serves, "wither I have been," both a semantic and a spelling error. Does anyone proofread these posts?
Nice game. A variety of other sudoku versions in combination with basic maths. I like it. Hoping for a version with 9 numbers
I quite enjoy this puzzle but once again I find there are huge anomalies in the scoring!
I think it's an enjoyable puzzle too. I'm just sorry miketop doesn't like the way we express ourselves.
Dear Jessie I don't know where I can do this so I'll do it here. WHO exactly is Baccal? I really think that spelling errors don't belong in any word site. Her name is Lauren Bacall and she deserves better. Generally there aren't too many spelling errors but when they come up they annoy the BEEEEEEEEEP out of fellow linguists. Maybe a spell check or someone who knows the trivia that you are working on. Other than that, thanks for everything love from maya
