Linguists have recently revealed that the 'huh' sound (what? and varying degrees of disbelief) is common to a very large proportion of languages. This is reassuring to the extent that, should you neither understand nor believe that which your overseas host has just said to you, you'll be able to convey this reaction unambiguously to her. Though none of this helps with any further understanding...

Sound alone is not enough. And, though proverbially a picture is worth a thousand words, an image alone doesn't seem to satisfy, either.

Which brings me to the comic book or, latterly, the graphic novel. Yes, in my childhood such evil objects were banned lest we be turned away from reading actual books (well, you could try...) though today the graphic novel is recognised as being able to be a legitimate part of the art/literature canon.

It is my pleasure, therefore, to acknowledge Roy Crane, a US cartoonist in whose cartoon strip, Wash Tubbs and Captain Easy, the BAM, POW and even, and I do love this one, LICKETY-WOP first appeared, thus giving the world a whole new onomatopoeic vocabulary and a convention for its use on the page.

Back to childhood.

The ban on the evil comic book objects was not entirely successful and finally collapsed with the intrusion of TV. With TV came the animated versions of the comic books and the comic-book inspired genius that was Batman. And with THAT came (drum roll) the Bat-fight word.

Google it yourself to pick one from SOCK! (do I remember a SOCKO!?) through THWAPP! to KAYO!

The exclamation mark is required for all.

It's delightful when there's this joyful mix of meaning, image and sound. The Batman series provided a feast of it but there’s certainly more. What were, indeed, are, your favourites?
