Salt of the earth

Here is where we bow to the Latin in all English-speakers. No, not the stereotypical image of a person of Mediterranean ancestry, but the language, Latin, on which so much of the English vocabulary is based.

And, in particular, to the Latin word for salt from which also we've gathered 'salary' (from the times when salt was so valuable one could pay for services in it) and 'salami' (preserved by salting and drying), plus the judgment calls of being above or below the salt or, indeed, being worth it.

But in summer, and it's very summery here this week, the salt derivative I'm grateful to is 'salad'.

Committed carnivores may claim the 'salt' link must arise from your having to drown your vegetables (of any mixture of edibles) in that substance in order to make them attractive. But summer salads themselves provide the best defence against such a view - they're deliciously refreshing and, quite apart from the 'salt', make their own contribution to our language.

Indeed in summer, not only our salads but our soups and all cold dishes provide a record of the expanding reach of cuisines from around the world.

The Vichyssoise of France has been around for a while, and the yummy gravlax of Scandinavia is enough to excuse the expansionist tendencies of it populations in ancient times (though Vikings also had great ships).

I'm wondering if there's anything particularly refreshing in the very names of the Vietnamese summer roll, goi cuon, or my favourite from Japan, zaru soba, the gazpacho of Spain or the oh, so English, cucumber sandwich.

Cool!

Which dish says summer to you?

l don`t like the idea of people spending so much money to wish someone a Happy Valentine`s Day, just simply saying l love you is enough, and you don`t even have to do that on the day just any or everyday.Everything is so commercialized now.

I think Jafa wants to know if there is a difference in intelligence between men and women.

Well Pedro, if we define intelligence as the ability to maintain an internal combustion engine, for example, I would readily defer to your greater wisdom... (please excuse the cliche) As PD suggests, we need the definition of intelligence made clear before we can argue whether indeed men or women are superior...

I think from cursory reading on the subject, that IQs are virtually identical. The difference in behaviour and interests is due to hormones, e.g. testosterone levels.
