Why can't I acces puzzles on my iPad?

Jessie: Hi Squackle, unfortunately YouPlay games are created in Flash... which is sadly not supported on iPhone/iPad at this stage. It's a frustrating situation that affects many websites and users. You'll be happy to know that this year we are working on a YouPlay app, from which you will be able to play all your favourite puzzles and games. We'll keep you posted!

Hi Jessie, I love YouPlay!!!!! I was wondering if there is any chance of a scrabble game? It would (or so I think) be a very fun addition and hopefully mean another multi-player game!

Jessie: A great idea! It's definitely on our list...

Have recently upgraded my membership and was delighted to recieve my free puzzle books. I handed over the Kids Puzzle Fun to my grandson Sean He was so excited he set about winning a fortune in prizes immediately, only to discover the books are 7 months out of date. We are very dissappointed, I would rather have had one current kids book . I thought it was a bit lousy.... Thankyou for your time, Barbara.

Jessie: Hi Barbara, firstly to explain the situation, the Lovatts Handy magazines are quarterly publications, and as we endeavour to get the free books out to our Premium Members ASAP, sometimes we will send the previous issue (rather than make you wait another three months). However, I'd hate for your grandson to be disappointed so I will contact you through your personal email to arrange sending out the latest copy, plus a copy of the annual Kids Bumper Fun.

I would like to query the spelling of "Tutanhhamun" in a recent General Knowledge crossword. I realise there are many and varied ways of spelling the boy king's name but I visited the official exhibition in Melbourne last weekend and have the booklet from that exhibition in front of me written by two distinguished scholars in this field and the spelling was as above and not "Tutankhamen" as alleged in your crossword.

Miranda: As to the spelling, there is as much agreement between philosophers as between clocks! Also, it would appear, Egyptologists. The spelling can be -AMUN -AMEN or - AMON

I have tried previously to have the cryptic crossword scoring system explained without success. I understand that extra points can be scored by a boost system that gives extra points for rapid answers. However, no-one seems willing to explain the impossibly-low times which are attributed to completing the cryptic crossword. These times, often less than one minute, presumably lead to scores more than double what a normal player can achieve. My conclusion - it's a waste of time trying to compare oneself with the so-called record scores, since clearly we are not competinging on a level playing field. Come on Lovatts - explain it.

Dr. Play:  The fact is that we have some very clever people playing our puzzles, some of which happen to be very quick on the keys.  Yes, it's true that someone could potentially solve most of the puzzle when not logged in and then return to their account with most of the solution before typing in the solution very quickly.  If you'd really like to get an idea of how fast others are finishing on average, check out the detailed leaderboards section, eg. for the Cryptic Crossword here - that will help you understand how you compare to those who are *really* doing the puzzle without hints or 'cheating'.  Hope that helps, happy puzzling!

do you have the key for this addoku? http://www.youplay.com/games/play/14/142237/ we tried over and over to solve it and there seems to be an error in it. How do we know if there are reported errors in a puzzle? dale

Jessie: Dale, you are correct, that Addoku puzzle does indeed contain an error. This has now been fixed - our apologies to you and your wife (and anyone else this puzzle stumped!)

Hi Jessie, I'm just sitting here on a lazy Sunday afternoon with my thoughts wandering (oops or is it that I'm losing my mind?) I love the number puzzles and the Trivia , Im not too bad at it considering that im classed as an old f**t ? hehehe. YP is just a nice way to spend some relaxation time away from a stressful job. I'm starting up my own business soon, so its been a challenge to get all the office stuff done. Have you ever felt ssooo frustrated with 'office word' that you are ready to throw a perfectly good computer through a perfectly good CLOSED window? (Memo to self... the vaccum does not pick up all of the glass). After countless tries to print my business cards... I finally succeeded - YAY! But they didnt fit the template... sob sob. Solution? EXIT windows word, click YP and put an old blanket up at the broken window to stop the cool night air (!) while i play some games and chat to friends, hehehe! -  Spoggy

I really love this site and many of its games, but I have to ask two questions: - why do I have to play Trivia Combat only with robots? I'm waiting for opponents, as I've been told ...and waiting...and waiting ...and after more than 10 minutes I have to give up and play with robots! Is it by chance because I'm a free and not a Premium member? I've played Trivia Combat many times and it happened just once to have a real opponent while the game is played by 700-800 other players. It is really frustrating! -why can't I save my results on my favourite game- Bookworm? I click on the "save" button and nothing happens.

JESSIE: The fact that you are a free Member will not affect who you play against in any combat game; a more likely answer to your query is that at the time you were playing there were not many available opponents.

Also, as Bookworm is a PopCap game (not a YouPlay house game) we are unable to offer the Save option. Can I suggest though that if you do play this game a lot you consider downloading the full version? You will then be able to save your progress - plus enjoy the HUGE amount of other features available in the download version. Download Bookworm HERE  - you can also play free for one hour to decide whether the game is absolutely right for you.

JESSIE: Hi JohnRose, in answer to your question, our game logs show that some members choose to play the crosswords over and over again (basically learning them by heart). This would no doubt result in a very fast time.

I'd just like to say, that my Tea and Toast and Cryptic, are the first thing on my daily agenda. After I have woken my brain I can then concentrate on the rest of the day. Thank you for making my day. I love all the puzzles and have been playing here since before the site was upgraded to its present format. Great Stuff. The only thing I'd like to see, is the Logic puzzles that have been described by others here. Also I agree with Beauregarde, about Dr Play's explanation of the Booster effect, so that the newer players can understand the scoring system. It would be beneficial to display his post.

avatar

From: JohnRose
Date: 7th July, 2011

Thanks for responding Beauregarde. I haven't followed up your suggestion yet as only just found it. However, just completed the cryptic in 3 minutes 3 seconds by working off line and then just typing in the answers on line (just for the experiment - I normally play fair). My score - still 19840 - the same score as for subsatntially higher times. Could Lovatts or Youplay please explain the scoring system to us newcomers

avatar

From: Beauregarde
Date: 2nd July, 2011

In reply to JohnRose - you might like to hunt up an archived blog called "Dr. Play talks points", which explains the "booster" effect. This affects the score according to our speed, and makes it possible to reach high scores by finishing all the words in a crossword right at the end. We used to have a forum, where we could exchange tips and knowledge about the puzzles, but that was discontinued. I wonder how many newcomers know there is such a thing as the booster, or how Dr Play suggested we use it. Could the original blog be resurrected to help current players?

JESSIE: You can read the Dr Play Talks Points blog HERE

Thank you to the staff and management of YouPlay. Not only have you provided me with hours and hours of fun, but also because of this site I have been introduced to your puzzle books. I use public transport and the first time I took one of your books with me I became so engrossed I missed my stop and was consequently late for work :D. A welcome addition would be multi-player word games to compliment the combat sudoku and combat trivia that already exist. Jig-saw puzzles would be nice too. Also, I would love Love LOVE it if the chat emoticons could be added to (eg a coffee cup, a piece of cake, a clown, an embarrassed face) and it would spice things up if we could choose different colours for text. Cheers :D

I've been using your site almost daily for a couple of months, mainly doing your cryptic crosswords which I enjoy. I cannot figure the scoring system. Somehow I never seem to score more than 19840, when others seem to be able to get more than double this. Also, how can anyone complete the cryptic in just 45 seconds? Even if you print off the puzzle and clues, complete it off line, and then go on line to just type in the words, I defy anyaone doing it in 45 seconds. What am I missing. Is there a link on your site to the scoring system, particularly of the cryptic crosswords?

avatar

From: bika

I would like to point out to debdestiny56 (and others like-minded) that just because there isn't a game recorded against a member's record it doesn't mean that that member hasn't visited the site and/or played a game. Have you considered that the weekly prize draw winners, who you are complaining about, may have serious Popcap web game addictions? I think the suggested proviso would be unfair. Let's celebrate our differences instead of expecting all to be as we are.

Hi Jessie. I think the games are great just as they are, I try to play most of them everyday, I'm fortunate that I have the time. I have one suggestion though regarding the weekly prize draw. I'm getting a little fed up with seeing winners who have never played a game or haven't played a game recently. I think you should bring in a proviso to winning the draw, it could be that in order to win a player must play at least 5 games a day or 20 a week. It would make it a lot fairer on those of us who do dedicate a lot of time to YouPlay and never win a thing. I play for the love of the games but the weekly prize draw would be icing on the cake for the most dedicated players. Thanks Deb

JESSIE: Hi Deb, I'd just like to mention that the laws surrounding running prize draws are crazily complex and highly explicit. For us to run draws at all we must allow ALL eligible members equal opportunity to win. Cheers

Once again, many thanks for a great tournament!

This has been a marvellous competition, and judging by the comments of numerous players, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I personally, anxiously await any further competitions.

My congratulations are extended to the other winners, and in general, to all those who participated and made this a truly exhilarating event.

Thank you very much, my Lucky Member cheque arrived. My sister's birthday next week so I will split the prize and buy us both some of your puzzle books, a great treat for both.

We both enjoy your site very much and get lots of enjoyment from it. Once again, thank you so much for the thrill and the treats.
